Field Sandburs are an annual weed that wreak havoc on our bare feet and puppy paws. These pesky summer annual weeds start germinating in the early summer in DFW and can germinate all summer long. The actively growing plants will produce thorny seeds all summer long for future field sandbur crops. These weeds are an indicator of some underlying issues that need to be addressed before chemical control measures are implemented like drought stress and a thin turf. Its important to improve watering practices, remove plants before mowing, dispose of plants off site, and improve turf thickness before starting a chemical program. These steps can NOT be skipped!! Once these are complete start applying pre emergent in the early spring and mid summer to prevent seeds from germinating. Pre emergent applications are not perfect and you will get some break through. When you do pull those plants by hand and don’t spread the seed my mowing over the plants.
